Random Thoughts About The Fall Of Troy

Sunday, November 26, 2006

Hey. I'm the other guy.

- So, I am watching some kind of pointless music awards where Jay-Z is performing one of his new post-retirement songs and I think to myself that it would be more akward if the camera during those performances was facing the crowd instead than facing the performer. That way, we could see all those big stars uncomfortably moving their bodies to the rhythm of some guy who they probably hate or would love to be. So they hate him for that.

- I was watching the Manchester United v. Chelsea game this morning and I started asking myself why Old Trafford (Manchester United's ground) is called The Theatre Of Dreams. That is such a commanding and fantastical name that it can't possibly be used to name something like a football stadium (or a rock band). But then again maybe a football ground is the place where many dreams come true. Faced with the boring day-to-day of human life in which our dreams ever so rarely come true, we have to delegate those dreams into third parties. In this case, a football team. When they win a championship, we win a championship. And in that way is easier to cope with real life. I may be a total loser working in a job I hate and stuck with a wife I loathe, but as long as MY team wins whatever corporate-sponsored tournament stands in its way, I'll be a happy camper. Besides, that Zidane dude just got his movie into the New York Museum of Modern Art. And art totally mixes with dreams.

- I watched Andy Garcia's The Lost City last night. It's a movie about how beautiful and flashy life was before the outbreak of the Cuban Revolution and how miserable and stupid it got after it. I don't defend the aftermath of the Cuban Revolution but the movie was pretty bad. Pointless character after another, two dimensional romances, propagandistic dialogue, too long of a running time, etc. Avoid it if the possibility to watch it presents to you. Unless you're a Cuban-American living in Little Havana who has fantasized more than once about ripping off Fidel Castro's beard. If you're one of those, you'll love this shit.

- And I'll probably dedicate another entry to this but I have to say that I'm really loving Rut Blees Luxembourg's photographs. You may have seen one of her works in the cover of The Streets' Original Pirate Material.

Enjoying the Arctic Breeze

Thursday, November 16, 2006

3 days ago my fellow patriots and I experimented the coldest temperatures registered in Costa Rica since 1981, I prefer to call it overreaction, but Juan Carlos Arce, a homeless guy who has been living in the streets for over 5 years reassures that he "almost died frozen" (not that you can die that way at 53F) but then again, I suppose he's not living in El Carmen's streets for being the most sincere person, although it wouldn't be strange if he was indeed. Maybe he is. Anyways, the cold, hmm it's gone already, now It's sunny and warm again (I'm actually writing this entry on a 2 day period), which is a great lesson, you can't write a post in 2 days.

Things change, more quickly than what you may expect, some others remain the same. Some others remain the same because they were never discovered, but, Why? They didn't ask for publicity. The buzz is the hardest part to get, but sometimes it slips just because you let go of the geniality disguising it as "amateurism". Dan Cockburn (or so he calls himself on myspace) did this cartoon 8 years ago (It feels more like the new wave era somehow). He was enthusiastic about it, although I don't think he was as much as I am right now, I think he didn't see the geniality. (maybe I am overrating, yes)
He says -"I was little and stupid, and drew things way too fast. Now when I look at my early cartoons, they look like a 9-year-old drew it. I had no patience and I sometimes would finish a small cartoon in 2 hours."
I think that's just perfect, a nine year old, drawing cartoons in two hours. Listen up hipsters, someone you can hire to do your vids without having to pay for insurance!

I really think this is one of the best homemade cartoons I've ever seen. He did it frame by frame, not only animating the characters, but also the backgrounds like if they were 3D. Nothing was CGI. He did it all with his camcorder.
Pay close attention to Mr. TV Head (ignoring his slavic accent)

Unfortunately, he was 16 back then. Now he is 24. I don't think he still has the same passion he did at 16.
Unfortunately too, I can no longer pretend I am somewhere else, weather is 75F (pretty tropical) It will be rising in the following days. Well, I guess that's good for Juan Carlos.
